Need some more concrete examples? We've got a few.
1. Outdoor adventure.
Hiking, biking, running. Greenville really has it all when it comes to outdoor adventure. Living downtown, you’re about 30 minutes from some stunning mountain parks, like Caesar’s Head and Table Rock. If you’re in for something a little flatter, you can always hop on the 32km Swamp Rabbit trail and go for a run or a bike. Our tip? Take a detour at Furman University and bike around the pond to see their famous bell tower. Speaking of biking, Greenville has been voted the 5th best cycling town in America by USA Today. The town is even home to some professional cyclists, like George Hincapie.
2. Southern hospitality.
People are just flat out nice in the South. Combine that with Greenville’s small-town charm and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find yourself chatting with perfect strangers on the street.
3. Family Fun.
There's something for everyone in Greenville. The city does a great job putting on festivals and events downtown. There's even a minor league baseball team, The Drive. They're a Redsox affiliate and their stadium is an ode to Fenway Park, complete with its own Green Monster. If the arts are more your thing, you can get your fill of plays, operas, and music performances at the Peace Center or one of the cities small theaters.
4. Foodie Scene.
Greenville has gotten an avalanche of attention for its foodie scene over the past couple years--and we think it's well deserved. But if you're more of a home chef, you can always visit the huge, weekly farmers market on Main Street to get some fresh ingredients and local goods. But there are also some great restaurants you can get to via the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Some of our favorites? Williams Hardware and Swamp Rabbit Cafe.
5. Two words: Main Street.
Greenville has done a fantastic job with its downtown and Main Street area in the past 15 years. Today, the area is alive with people visiting restaurants, coffee shops, and local stores. On a nice day, you can find people picnicking and strolling around Falls Park. When it’s really warm, they’ll dip their feet in the Reedy River or sit on the rocks by the waterfall. That’s right: a waterfall right in the middle of an urban center. The first time you go, you have to get a picture on Liberty Bridge, the suspension bridge over the Reedy River that was completed in 2004. It's a work of art in itself and has become one of the area's crowning achievements.
6. The weather.
South Carolina is known for some beautiful weather, and Greenville is no exception. Since the city is located in the state’s Upstate region, it has slightly cooler summers than Columbia or Charleston, thanks in part to the nearby mountains. The town does have the occasional snow storm in the winter. And when it happens it’s totally worth the trouble, because the city turns into a picturesque winter wonderland.
