When is the Least Expensive Time to Move?
Want to save a few bucks on moving? Of course, you do. Timing is everything, and we have a few tips. No guarantees, just tips!
Move in the middle of the week
If you can take a day off in the middle of the week, you’re one of the lucky ones. Most people have to wait until the weekend, which means movers will be busier and may charge higher prices because of the higher demand for their services.
Move in the middle of the month
Renters usually move at the beginning or end of the month, so you should plan accordingly since, as a homeowner, your timing isn’t controlled by the end or beginning of a lease. Watch out for holidays, even the spring breaks of schools in your town, because those are also popular moving times.
Move at the crack of dawn
So, this may not save you money, but it will save you time. And time is money! If you’re hiring movers, try to be the first move of the day, so they’ll finish early, with no delays, and you can spend the rest of the day getting comfortable in your new place.
Move in the middle of winter
Depending on where you live, this may be less appealing. But May through September is peak moving months, so if you can work around them, you may save money. A move in January in Florida is a great idea. Lower temperatures will make movers more efficient, and you’ll save by moving in the offseason. But what if you’re in New York? A blizzard may slow you down or require rescheduling your move altogether.
A lot of people don’t have a choice when it comes to picking a moving date, and you may be one of them. But if you do have some flexibility, shop around and find the best price to get the job done!
